Little Mermaid Bedroom Remodel

39072692_959773305296_3760802277820989440_nNormally, I post about Disney vacation deals & discounts, being a travel agent and all, but the next two posts will be about my kids’ bedrooms!  We decided to remodel them this past month; my oldest daughter chose a Star Wars themed room and my youngest chose a Little Mermaid themed room.

This post will be about the Little Mermaid room.  We’re still adding the finishing touches to my oldest’s Star Wars room, so I’ll post about her room in the next couple of weeks.

Our kids have been raised Disney kids, as you might expect, so it comes as no surprise that my princess girly-girl wanted a Little Mermaid themed room.  We scoured Pinterest for ideas and I spend a LOT of time shopping for each individual component, both online & in stores.

Let’s start with the BEFORE pictures.

IMG_6235

The room before we started was our old nursery/room that held anything that I didn’t have a spot for.  It was becoming a sort of “catch-all” room.

IMG_6236

The floors are nice wood flooring, which we kept, the walls were white, and the curtains were something that were there when we moved in *cough* 3 years ago *cough*.

IMG_6237

You can see how it was just kinda piling up in here.

We had both girls in 1 bedroom, sharing an bunk bed, but we decided to split them up and cater to each of their very unique & different interests.  We let my oldest choose which room she wanted and she wanted to keep her room, so my youngest would be moved to this room – the old nursery, but soon-to-be Little Mermaid room.

We knew we wanted a reading nook, with a chair, for both kids.  And both kids would have a bed, of course.  But for Olivia, we had to have a dress up corner.  She dresses up on an almost daily basis and we didn’t have a good storage area for her dresses.

You guys.  I’m so excited to share the AFTER pictures.  They make my heart SO happy.  #cheezybuttrue

IMG_6681

For the walls, I chose an aqua blue color.  Olivia, my youngest, declared she was “under the sea, mom!”.  Exactly what I was going for.  I also hunted far and wide for this rug.  It needed to be large enough (8×10) and I wanted it to encompass many colors, so to bring the room together.  I found that rug at Joss & Main and am in love with it.  It’s perfect.

The dresser in the above picture was something we kept over from the nursery.  We toyed around with the idea of refinishing it white, to match her bed frame, but decided to keep it natural in the end.

IMG_6683

I love the floor lamp we put in the room!  It’s from Target, but matches her vintage bed frame perfectly and seems to fit so well.  The round pillow on her chair is also from Target and it’s so soft and flexible, I was in love.

IMG_6684

I love this reading nook!

IMG_6685

My husband built this book bin storage unit for me when I found one online for way too much money.  It cost us about $50 in materials to make.

The picture collage is fun – Olivia picked out the Disney’s Little Mermaid pictures.  She loves Ariel.  But my favorite touch is adding a picture of her & her sister in Disney World, meeting Ariel.

IMG_6690

For the bed frame, I spray painted an old Jenny Lind bed white.  My husband reinforced the frame by putting down a piece of plywood before we put the mattress in.

IMG_6682

She wanted a canopy, so we hung one up.  Such a fun touch!

IMG_6694

The pillows & quilt came from TJ Maxx and the sign from Hobby Lobby.

IMG_6686

I wanted some toy storage for her room, so I found a great piece that looks just like the one you can get from Crate & Barrel but not nearly as pricey.  We found this at our local Home Goods for $50.

IMG_6687

Notice the “dinglehopper” 😉

A few other close ups – the chair (also from Home Goods) has a clam shell back and is perfect!  I wanted one with arms for a more cosy set up.

IMG_6693

And the fun little sign on top of her dresser.

IMG_6691

But ah!  I saved the BEST for last.  The dress up corner.

IMG_6688

I love, love this part of the room.  The copper rod is perfect, the full length mirror is necessary for a princess to see how her dress looks, and the ease of access is exactly what she needed for her many, many dresses.

IMG_6689

We took some old swinging doors from our downstairs area and I used a paint sprayer on them.  I think it’s such a great way to add dimension and color to the corner.

IMG_6695

She truly does, literally, leave a little sparkle wherever she goes.

IMG_6692

This was such a fun project!  The room fits Olivia like a glove & brightens the upstairs for us all!  And our little ballerina LOVES it.

Free Dining 2017 Rumors

free-dining

I’m seeing the same rumors float around the internet for Free Dining 2017 the past couple of days – enough to share it here.  The following information came from DisneyTouristBlog:

“Rumors are starting to fly that Free Dining will be released on April 24, 2017. As best I can tell, this info is coming exclusively from a Brazilian travel agency.

Normally, I’d write this off. Info leaking out this far in advance of the release date is fairly unprecedented. However, the details seem plausible and I see others reporting the same info (they could just be regurgitating the same rumor, though). Given that, I thought I’d at least share, as an FYI.

Rumored Free Dining dates:

• August 13 – September 30, 2017
• November 14 – 20, 2017
• November 25 – 27, 2017
• December 8 – 23, 2017
As part of this rumor, both Value and Moderate Resorts receive the Quick Service Disney Dining Plan, while Deluxe and Deluxe Villa Resorts receive the standard Disney Dining Plan.

The big pieces of news here: moderates are only receiving the Quick Service Disney Dining Plan.

If this rumor is accurate, that suggests to me Disney is pretty confident in its bookings thus far for the summer, and occupancy projections for this fall and winter. With Pandora in Animal Kingdom opening and record consumer confidence in the United States, this wouldn’t surprise me. In fact, the details and internal consistency of this rumor make it highly plausible in my view.”

Of course, this is all a lot of speculation about a rumor that I think could very well be incorrect, but again, I wanted to share since this is the consistent information floating around the internet right now 🙂

That’s all for now!  I’ll continue to keep you posted!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If you need personalized help with planning any aspect of your vacation, or want someone to book the Free Dining promotion for you and provide other assistance along the way–I recommend contacting me, a no fee “Authorized Disney Vacation Planner” (Disney’s term for a travel agent) to get a quote and to help you plan.
I am not just saying this to get your booking, but having your trip pre-booked with a good travel agent (such as myself), helps get the discount for your preferred dates/resort. 🙂
I receive my commission from Disney, so I will never charge you extra for booking your trip and helping you get the most our of your vacation, discounts, planning, etc..
Last year I worked tirelessly for all my clients to get the discount applied to their vacations.  In order to grab the free dining discount, I checked very very early in the morning (3-4am) & had emailed all my pre-booked clients before I moved to new bookings & quote requests.  The longer it takes to book/apply the discount, the less availability there is.  Being pre-booked made the process go much faster!
Have questions?  Email me with any & all questions, I am SO happy to help🙂
5 things you can do to get Disney’s Free Dining in 2017
FB-Free Dining
By far, the most popular discount Disney offers is the Free Dining discount.  It’s the #1 discount everyone wants, waits for, plans around, and asks me about.
I have a lot of the same questions pop up as we wait for free dining, usually with the same theme: “What’s our best shot of getting free dining?”
While there’s never a guarantee that free dining will be released, if it is, here’s the top 5 things YOU can do to better your chances of getting your food for free when you vacation in Disney World in 2017:
TOP 5 things YOU do to get FREE DINING 2017:
  1.  Know when to go & where to stay
Paying attention to the historical free dining information of years really helps you decide when to go and where to stay to give you the best shot of getting a free dining discount for your 2017 Disney vacation.
Normally, it’s announced in late April/earlyMay.  In 2016, Free Dining was released on April 25, 2016.
Here are the Walt Disney World Free Dining dates that were available for booking in 2016, which should give you some insight into what will be offered in 2017:
  • August 23 – October 1
  • November 15 – 21
  • November 26 – 28
  • December 10 – 21
Here were the room exclusions for 2016 (and I would expect to see the same for 2017):  All suites, campsites and 3 bedroom villas have been excluded from this offer, as were the Little Mermaid rooms at the new Art of Animation Resort, Port Orleans French Quarter, All-Star Movies, Villas at the Grand Floridian Resort and the new Villas and Bungalos at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort. All other Disney resorts, including value resorts were included in the offer.  And Port Orleans Riverside was only available for arrivals August 23 through October 1, 2016.
Trying to plan your trip with a check in date that coincides with the previous year’s free dining discount dates & staying in a resort that wasn’t excluded last year helps a lot!
  2. Book your vacation NOW.
There is no reason to wait for free dining to be released before you book your trip.  If you know you want to go, and you’ve decided on dates that have a good chance of being included in free dining, then book your trip!
Disney World vacations only require a $200 deposit to book and that deposit is 100% refundable up until 30 days before your departure date.  Since we expect free dining to be released at the end of April and we’ll know all the details of Fall 2017 then, there is NO risk to you to book now.
Having your trip booked in advance is SO helpful for something else I highly recommend: making Advance Dining Reservations (ADRs) as soon as possible (ADRs can be booked 180 days in advance of your check in date). Yes, even before Free Dining goes live. Everyone reserves the good ADRs quickly for potential Free Dining dates, so if you don’t book early, you can be stuck eating counter service or unpopular restaurants for the duration of your trip if you don’t plan ahead.
  3.  Be flexible, as much as you can
Historically, Free Dining has been a fall/early winter promotion and based on past promotions, you can plan your visit to give you a good chance of being included in 2017’s free dining discount.  But predictions are obviously just that, and all of this is subject to change based on occupancy trends and projections.  Being flexible with your travel dates and where you stay helps increase your chances of a great free dining discount!
   4.  If you have a Disney VISA card, use it for your $200 deposit
It’s not necessary to have a Disney Visa card to get free dining.  But if you do already have a Disney Visa card, I recommend using it for the deposit just in case being a Disney Visa cardholder helps your chances of securing free dining.
Last year, there was no early booking window for Disney Visa cardholders, but there was an expanded date range. The two years before, Disney Visa cardholders did have an early booking window.  Most years, the general public is able to book Free Dining packages 5 days after Disney Visa cardholders can book.
In years past, Free Dining has been announced in late April, with booking opening first for Disney Visa credit card holders and the general public a few days later. Last year, there was no early window for Disney Visa cardholders. However, Disney Visa cardholders were able to book free dining starting August 14 vs. the general public start date of August 23rd.
   5. Book your vacation with me or Email me to be notified about free dining 🙂
If you need personalized help with planning any aspect of your vacation, or want someone to book the Free Dining promotion for you and provide other assistance along the way–I recommend contacting me, a no fee “Authorized Disney Vacation Planner” (Disney’s term for a travel agent) to get a quote and to help you plan.
